GREETINGS FROM
SUNNNY CAPE TOWN:
We cannot believe that we are already going into
the third month of 2013. Wow, time sure flies. We have been very hectic
from the beginning of the month, new members signing up, upgrading our
website (which should be ready later in the month). As promised
here is our first country town I will tell you about.
COLESBERG – Northern Cape
Ever wonder why some people rave about their town while others
might not understand the hype? It is explained simply through “Pride of
Place.” The overwhelming emotion of just being able to
be, while you are fully accepted for who you are without reserve.
Travelling through the Karoo you will encounter many interesting small
towns, such as Colesberg, where you are received warmly and easily
accepted by the local community, hospitality it seems comes naturally to
the locals. The town is nestled amid a rocky outcrop, sheltered
from the vast plains, and cemented by architecture that covers the
history of our country. The town evokes feelings of nostalgia from a time
when etiquette and good manners were the order of the day. Entrenched in
history and stories of old, Colesberg has long been known as a
refreshment station, and is half way between Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Many of the old buildings are still standing and a few have original reed
ceilings, sash windows, yellowwood beams and doors. There is a love of
history in Colesberg, old and new gracefully complimenting each other. A
warning to visitors, do not get too nostalgic as nostalgia is a strange
emotion, it wants you to travel roads once travelled and tread in
footsteps that the winds of time have blown away, only to find that
all has changed, yet stayed the same.
