The Montagu Pass and Toll House were constructed between 1844 and 1847 by Henry Fancourt (Australian surveyor and engineer), and was declared a National monument in 1972.

The Toll House was erected to provide accommodation for the Toll keeper and his family. Indigenous sandstone was used and it originally had a thatched roof, but unfortunately, the thatch was destroyed by a fire in 1855 and was replaced with corrugated iron.

Over the years through weathering by the elements and its remote location, it was also vandalized by vagrants who destroyed what they could.

Despite the fact that it was declared a monument the Friends of the Toll House, a non-profit organization founded by Gerda Stols, was created to restore this old lady back to her original splendour.

This is an ongoing process to preserve a piece of history in the oldest unaltered Pass still in South Africa Gerda looks forward to welcoming you all to this amazing historical home, now a Museum.

CTC Marketing Travel Blog No.8

Today’s Blog it’s about Hermanus that formerly was a small fishing village, but a place this beautiful could not remain a secret for long.

Today, it is a popular vacation spot offering extraordinary views and beaches along with a number of oceanic attractions, including Whale watching.

There is a path along the cliffs that offer particularly spectacular views and also serves as an excellent vantage point for watching the whales from the shore. In the summer, there is even a whale festival.

The fields surrounding Hermanus are covered in diverse wildflowers and, the breezy climate is comparable to that Mediterranean.

Hermanus was founded in the early 1800s by a man called Hermanus Pieters who had happened upon the area when searching for better grazing for his livestock. Freshwater spring and excellent grazing pastures convinced him to stay and soon other farmers and fishermen followed suit to the plentiful area.

The thriving fishing and business industry in Hermanus required better and faster means for the transportation of goods to the established town. Thus plans were drawn for the extension of the railway line in Botriver to continue to Hermanus.

However, these plans did not sit well with the Head of South African Railways and Harbour Services, Sir William Hoy.

Sir William and his family often vacationed in Hermanus and he believed that the influx of pollution from the trains and extra holiday-makers would spoil the tranquil beauty of the town. For this reason, Sir William overruled the plans for the extension and established a horse and carriage service between the 2 towns instead.

Till today, the Hermanus Railway Station remains the only train station in the world where no train has arrived to or departed from.

Today the Hermanus Tourism Bureau operates from this historically important building.

We are proud producers of Honeybush Tea and Proteas on our Herold Meander farm situated halfway between George and Oudtshoorn just north of the Outeniqua Mountains. Our indigenous Honeybush tea is a herbal tea that is naturally caffeine-free with very low tannin levels and high antioxidants. The traditional knowledge of Honeybush is closely linked to the Khoikhoi ancestry of the local communities.

Our Honeybush tea is cultivated from seeds in our nursery. After six months it is planted on southern slope farmlands to naturally grow until it is annually harvested after 2 years.

The Protea plant may appear over many areas south of the Limpopo. However, 92% of the species is only found in the Cape Floral Kingdom, in a narrow belt of mountain coastal land, stretching from Clanwilliam to Grahamstown.
